Basic strategies for playing roulette: tips for beginners

Roulette is one of the most iconic games in the casino world. If you’re new to it, don’t worry — this guide will teach you the basics, how to place your bets, and some strategies to make your experience more enjoyable.

Roulette is a game of chance based on a numbered wheel and a ball. The wheel is divided into 37 or 38 slots, depending on the version (European roulette has 37 slots, while American roulette has 38 due to the double zero). The numbers on the wheel go from 0 to 36 (in the European version), alternating between red and black pockets. The goal is to guess which slot the ball will land in once the wheel stops spinning.

The table is where players place their bets. It is divided into two main sections:

1) Inside bets. These are bets placed directly on the numbers on the table. They are more specific and offer higher payouts, but they are also riskier.

  • Split bet: betting on two adjacent numbers on the table.
  • Corner bet: betting on four numbers that form a square.

  • D’Alembert strategy: instead of doubling, this strategy suggests increasing your bet by one unit after a loss and decreasing it by one unit after a win. It’s a more conservative way to manage your bets.
  • Fibonacci strategy: based on the famous Fibonacci sequence, this strategy has you increase your bets following the sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, etc.) after each loss, and move back two steps in the sequence when you win.
  • Labouchere strategy: this involves creating a sequence of numbers and crossing them off each time you win a bet. If you lose, you add the lost amount to the end of the sequence.

By understanding the rules, knowing the bets, and adopting a suitable strategy, you can enjoy this game to the fullest.
